In 2026, this extraordinary event returns to its birthplace: Kyrgyzstan. And if there was ever a reason to finally book that trip to Central Asia!

What Are the World Nomad Games?

Think of it as the Olympics — but instead of swimming and gymnastics, athletes compete in horseback archery, eagle hunting, and kok-boru (yes, that is a traditional polo game played with a goat carcass, and yes, it is as thrilling as it sounds).

The World Nomad Games celebrate the sporting and cultural traditions of nomadic peoples from across the world. First held in Kyrgyzstan in 2014, the Games have grown into a global event attracting athletes and visitors from nearly 90 countries. After editions in Turkey (2022) and Kazakhstan (2024), the 6th Games return home to Kyrgyzstan in 2026 — and the whole country is buzzing with excitement.

This is not a tourist show. It is a living, breathing celebration of traditions that have survived for thousands of years. Walking among the yurts, hearing the komuz (a traditional Kyrgyz string instrument) fill the mountain air, watching falconers release their eagles — it gets under your skin in the best possible way.

The Key Dates

  • August 31, 2026 — Opening Ceremony, Bishkek (coincides with Kyrgyzstan’s Independence Day — double celebration!)
  • September 1–6, 2026 — Main competitions and Ethno Festival in Issyk-Kul region
  • September 6, 2026 — Closing Ceremony, Cholpon-Ata

I recommend to plan your trip as early as. possible since the good accommodations in Cholpon-Ata and close areas are already booked. Plan to arrive in Bishkek on August 30 to settle in before the opening. Most visitors stay 7–10 days to combine the Games with a wider Kyrgyzstan experience.

Where Do the Events Take Place?

The Games are spread across several spectacular venues:

  • Bishkek — Opening Ceremony at a new stadium on August 31
  • Hippodrome, Cholpon-Ata — All horse events: Kok-Boru, Er Enish (horseback wrestling), traditional horse racing
  • Gazprom Sports Complex, Cholpon-Ata — Wrestling disciplines (Alysh, Kazakh Kuresi, Kyrgyz Kurosh, Sumo, Sambo)
  • Rukh Ordo Cultural Center — Mas-wrestling, Toguz Korgool (board games), arm wrestling
  • Kyrchyn Gorge Ethno Village — Archery, horseback archery, falconry, eagle hunting, cultural performances

Events You Cannot Miss

You could fill an entire week just watching competitions, but here are the highlights:

Kok-Boru — Teams on horseback compete to carry a goat carcass and score in a goal. Fast, chaotic, and utterly unforgettable. This is the Game’s signature event.

Horseback Archery — Riders shoot arrows at full gallop. The combination of speed, balance, and precision is breathtaking.

Eagle Hunting (Burkut Saluu) — Trained golden eagles dive from the sky at their handler’s command. One of the rarest and most powerful sights you will ever witness.

Er Enish — Wrestlers on horseback try to pull each other off their mounts. It requires full-body strength and total trust in your horse.

The Ethno Festival — Beyond sports, there are folk music performances, traditional crafts, felt-making demonstrations, and open-air feasts. This is where you wander, eat, and let Kyrgyz culture wash over you.

How to get to Cholpon-Ata on Your Own

Where is Cholpon-Ata: 265 km east of Bishkek, on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul

The driving route — Bishkek → Boom Gorge (with a note to stop for photos!) → Balykchy → northern shore → Cholpon-Ata

Option 1: Bus, shared mini-bus or shared taxi
Important note: The old Western Bus Station is closed as of late 2024. Do not go there. Use the main Avtovokzal on Alma-Atinskaya Street –

  • Ask the cashier (Касса / Kassa) for a ticket to Cholpon-Ata
  • Marshrutkas leave when full — come in the morning (7am–10am) for the most departures
  • No fixed timetable. Just show up and wait — usually 20–40 minutes
  • You can just take shared taxi with locals

Price for bus, mini-bus: approximately 400–500 som per person (~$4–5 USD) Price for shared taxi: 600-800 som per person.

Journey time: 3.5–4.5 hours What to expect: A minibus (usually a Mercedes Sprinter), stops along the way to pick up and drop off passengers. Bring water and a snack.

Option 2: Scenic Train to Balykchy + Onward Taxi

  • Summer only (mid-June to end of August) — panorama train with large windows
  • Departs Bishkek 2 at approximately 6:50am, arrives Balykchy around 12:15pm
  • Ticket price: very affordable for VIP cabins which are the best (around 800-1000 som) — check Kyrgyz Railways for exact schedules – https://railway.kg/
  • From Balykchy, take a shared taxi or marshrutka east along the lake to Cholpon-Ata: approximately 150–200 som, 1,5-2 hours

The train ride through the Boom Gorge and alongside the lake is one of the most beautiful journeys in Central Asia. Slow? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

Why Visit Kyrgyzstan Beyond the Games?

This is the part we love most. The World Nomad Games are a perfect reason to visit — but Kyrgyzstan will keep you long after the closing ceremony.

Combine the Games with a few nights at Song-Kul Lake (a high-altitude alpine lake where nomadic families still summer with their herds), a ride through the Tien Shan mountains, or a night in a traditional yurt under a sky full of stars. This country rewards slow travel and curious minds.
